How Feed.fm Works

Feed.fm is a Unified Music System designed to help you stream popular music into your digital experience quickly and legally. Feed.fm can power a branded, monetizable listening experience, act as a soundtrack that plays alongside existing video or audio content, or serve music to your users in other creative ways. There are three parts to the Unified Music System (UMS): streaming, curation, and compliance.

Streaming

Feed.fm offers non-interactive radio experiences to your users through our radio API and SDKs. The term Non-Interactive generally means that the end user has no awareness or control over the order in which songs are played.

Despite the title non-interactive, there are still plenty of interactions that are allowed. For instance:

  • Provide a menu of available station choices to your users (we call this a Music Menu). This can be as simple as a list of stations or a more robust experience that allows users to browse stations by category.

  • Dual Stream Audio: independent volume control of the music from Feed.fm and the audio inherent in your video content.

  • Transport controls: Play, Pause, Skip*, Like/Dislike*: capture end user preferences and send them to Feed.fm’s curation team for station feedback.

Curation

All music through Feed.fm is delivered through stations, which we use to organize songs by genre, theme, or any other special purpose. We offer different types of station curation to fit different needs, whether you want stations designed entirely by our expert curation team and continuously optimized for engagement, or stations built collaboratively with Feed.fm's curators and tailored to fit your brand exclusively. The curation types available to you are outlined in your contract.

You can check out all the stations available to your app in the Customer Portal. The Customer Portal is your home base, where you’ll find your API credentials, your list of stations, analytics, and various other information pertaining to your app. Navigate to the Stations tab to preview the music that's available for your app.

Stations can contain music from 3 different pre-cleared catalogs, each providing different territory rights. Your available music catalogs are defined in your contract. This ultimately determines the music available to serve in your stations. Below is a breakdown of the different available catalogs.

CatalogDescription
Select CatalogMainstream, popular music licensed for playback to users in specific territories (US, CA, and AU).
Global CatalogMusic from top indie labels that are also pre-cleared for worldwide streaming.
Feed OriginalsFunctional music for fitness, sports, health and wellness brands. Wholly owned by Feed Media Group.

Compliance

Streaming popular music in a commercial product normally means separate agreements with labels, publishers, and performing rights organizations in every territory you operate in, each with its own reporting and payment obligations. Feed.fm is built to handle all of these complexities for you, right out of the box.

Every song we deliver is fully cleared for the territory your listener is in, and we report and pay rights holders for every play. You do not need a direct relationship with a label, publisher or PRO.

Integrating with Feed.fm

SDK or REST API

There are two ways to integrate Feed.fm into your app, client SDKs or the REST API.

Our client SDKs cover Android, iOS and the web, and handle playback reporting, skip permission and credential management for you. They are the shortest path forward on those platforms.

The REST API runs anywhere your code can make an HTTP request: any platform, any language, client-side or server-side. Choose it to reach any other platform, to run server-side, or to share one integration across every platform you support. Calling the API directly makes your app responsible for reporting every play, requesting skip permission before skipping a song, and managing client credentials.

Apps and Credentials

When you sign up, we create a production app and a development app for your product, each with its own token and secret. See Apps and Credentials for more information on where to find these and how to properly setup your credentials. If you're looking to quickly build a working prototype, use the test credentials listed here as a starting point.

Display Requirements

Our music licenses require your app to display song metadata while music plays, and to carry a legal disclaimer. These are contractual obligations rather than recommendations, and we verify them before you go live.

The going live checklist sets out what has to appear, for how long, and how far it may be from the music experience, along with the exact disclaimer wording.
